HOW PHOTOGRAPHY IS LINKED TO ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
In the late 1900s, parallel to the rise of visual mass media, environmentalism arose in the form of protecting birds and preserving nature. Activists were eager to communicate with others about environmental issues. The activists used photography and many more techniques to promote environmental issues. In those times, birds were killed and hunted for their feathers. Feathers became a popular fashion statement thus leading to birds being severely hunted for their feathers. Nestlings would watch their parents get killed right in front of their eyes live. Activists used photography to describe these problems. They also confronted models wearing feathered clothing and hats with pictures of slaughtered birds and starving nestlings, or arranged photographs as documentation, documenting starving nestlings after they had watched their parents get killed for their feathers by hunters. Another campaign of environmentalism targeted oil pollution. After World War I, the shipping industry enlarged thus leading oil to be scattered around the ocean from ships all over the world, while trade routes could be seen without a map following the previous ships passing the route. Photographs were taken about crashed ships, oil spills, and more. The oil pollution escalated into a severe environmental issue as the shipping industry started producing oil-powered vessels. Manufacturing oil-powered ships was also a problem as resources were being wasted. The newly made ships would spill oil as a small miscalculation would result in serious changes, increasing the risk and danger of miscalculations. Photography showed how dangerous this is for the environment.Protests were taken, as photographs helped the activists reveal how risky this is for the environment.Just like feathers, oil was highly searched for because of the innovation in the ship industry promoting the use of crude oil as a fuel used for modern vehicles.As the trend of environmentalism enlarged,more images were taken of global issues.
